| Fish aquafarming is an activity that is starting to take off in Martinique as possible diversification of giant river prawn breeding (Macrobrachium Rosenbergii) which debuted in the middle of the 70s. Two species were involved, one freshwater species (the red tilapia or Saint-Pierre) and a marine species (the redfish or red drum). This mission report presents, in the first section, the local conditions of fish aquafarming development in Martinique the current characteristics of the breeds, the existing production sector and its management. A second section inventories the main operating constraints of this field technical or market constraints. |

| 15% of the shellfish production in France comes from natural deposits and the other 85% from farming. Years 1980-1990 showed a slight decrease in the shellfish production then a resurgence from 1985 onwards, an increase in the oyster production and a strong decrease in mussel production at the beginning of the 1980's followed by a resurgence due to the increase of open sea activity. In France, the shellfish market represents 300,000 tons, divided between oysters (40%), mussels (30%) and scallops (15%). Importations of mussels and scallops in order to supply the domestic market are important. On the other hand, external trade flows are very low as far as oysters are concerned: France is the only important market for oysters in Europe. (unverified OCR) |

| Les îles et archipels français des Caraibes, de l'Océan Indien, du Pacifique et l'île de Saint Pierre et Miquelon concentrent la majorité des 1,670 millions de français habitant outre-mer. Il s'agit de terres étroites, éloignées de la métropole et distantes entre elles, éparses et souvent composées d'archipels. A l'exception de Saint Pierre et Miquelon, elles sont tropicales et soumises à des risques climatiques majeurs (cyclones). | The goal of this study was to provide economic data to align Ifremer's research programme with the global socio-economic context, which is the crux of this work. Although the economies of the French Overseas Departments and Territories are poorly understood in mainland France, a brief macroeconomic analysis shows that they have the following main features: steady, but unbalanced growth, as indicated by high unemployment rates and low trade indices, and an overdeveloped services sector. This situation can be explained by an economic growth regime specific to the French overseas regions. It is based on, for the most part, public subsidies, a voluntary strategy promoted by the public authorities to raise the standards of living in the overseas regions. |
